Which of these is you

Window 1: Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary)

Pays: tuition waived for the whole degree; HUF 43,700 a month (about €110, about ₦174,000) for bachelor's and master's, 12 months a year; doctoral HUF 140,000 rising to 180,000; a free dormitory place or HUF 40,000 a month (about ₦159,000) towards rent; Hungarian public healthcare plus supplementary cover. Does not pay: airfare or a settlement grant, and the call itself warns the housing contribution will not cover full rent in Budapest.

Dates: the 2026/27 call closed 15 January 2026; the 2027/28 call is expected to open around November 2026 with a mid-January 2027 deadline, not yet published. Watch the apply page and the portal.

Honest odds: the programme publishes roughly 5.6 percent acceptance. About 1 in 18. A strong file is built in months, not in the deadline week, which is what the plan below is for.

Rules after you win: a free compulsory Hungarian language and culture course, and at least 18 credits on average over two semesters or the status can be ended.

Window 2: Open Doors (Russia, government quota)

Pays: tuition-free study under the Russian government quota, bachelor's to PhD and a postdoctoral track, plus a monthly university stipend; you budget flight, housing, food, insurance and visa fees. Who: foreign citizens and stateless persons. Dates: registration 20 August to 1 November 2026; second stage 13 November to 21 December; third stage (doctoral and postdoctoral interviews) 22 December 2026 to 26 February 2027. Held online, in Russian and English. Rules: od.globaluni.ru/rules.

The next two windows, honestly

Türkiye Scholarships usually opens in January, and Commonwealth Shared Scholarships usually runs December to February. They enter this pack only when their official pages publish 2027 dates, because a window without a published date is a rumour, not a plan.

Tomiwa's four-month plan (a picture, not a client)

September: transcript requested from Ilorin; two referees asked (one academic, one professional), told the deadline; CV updated. October: IELTS or TOEFL sat (check the programme's language rule on the study finder; some programmes accept a medium-of-instruction letter). Early November: the call opens; two programmes chosen on the study finder the same week; the Nigerian sending partner's pre-selection deadline written at the top of the page. November: motivation letter drafted against the call's own questions and read by two people. December: submitted on the Hungarian portal and through the sending partner's process. January: nothing left to do but wait. Alongside, from today: Open Doors registered before 1 November.

The motivation letter structure that fits this programme

Paragraph 1: the programme and why Hungary specifically, naming the university's strength. Paragraph 2: your academic record with two concrete results. Paragraph 3: what you will do with the degree in Nigeria; the programme exists to build relations with sending countries, so say it through your plan. Paragraph 4: why you will finish, because the 18-credit rule is real. One page. No template sentences.

Mistakes

1. Missing the Nigerian sending partner's earlier deadline.
2. Choosing a programme not in Nigeria's agreed fields.
3. A motivation letter written in January.
4. Budgeting nothing for the flight and first month.
5. Paying anyone for "processing".
