Erasmus Mundus for Nigerian corpers and graduates: Europe pays your master's from September 2027

What it is and what it pays

An Erasmus Mundus Joint Master is a master's designed and delivered by at least three universities in at least three countries, mostly in Europe. You study in two or three of them and graduate with a joint or multiple degree. The EU-funded scholarship for the best-ranked applicants covers participation costs (tuition and insurance), contributes to travel and visa costs, and pays a living allowance of €1,400 a month, about ₦2.2m, for up to 24 months. On 16 July 2026 the European Commission announced 37 new programmes selected in the latest call, opening for student applications in the autumn of 2026 for a September 2027 start, with full scholarships available to students from across the world. Source: 87 projects selected under Erasmus Mundus.

Why September 2027 matters if you are serving

The application season runs from this autumn to about February. Results arrive between March and June. Programmes begin in September 2027, the month Batch C finishes service. The service year is the one year with an allowance, no rent and free evenings; it is also, exactly, the application season.

Who qualifies

A bachelor's degree, or final-year status with completion before the programme starts (proof is required before enrolment). Any class of degree can apply; most programmes ask for a second class upper or equivalent, and strong references carry a lower class. No age limit. You apply directly to each programme's consortium through its own website; there is no central office and no fee.

How to read a programme page

Every page in the official Erasmus Mundus catalogue carries four things to find before a programme goes on your list: the scholarship quota for students from outside Europe (two or three seats is a different fight from fifteen); the deadline, and the scholarship deadline is usually earlier than the admission deadline; the English rule (a test, or a letter from your university confirming English as the medium of instruction); and how references are sent. Build a list of five: two in your exact field, two in an adjacent field where your degree still fits, and at least one of the 37 new programmes.

The documents, gathered once

1. Transcript, with a one-page letter from your exams office explaining the grading scale.
2. Degree certificate, or a university letter confirming graduation and the date.
3. Two academic references from lecturers who taught you.
4. CV in Europass format, two pages.
5. A motivation letter, one to two pages, adapted for each programme: what you did with your degree, why this programme, what you will fix with it and where, why now. Not a letter about leaving Nigeria.
6. English proof, whichever the programme accepts.
7. Passport data page.
8. Evidence of your NYSC community development project, with photos and a one-page summary.

Ask referees eight weeks before the earliest deadline, with your transcript, CV and draft letter attached, and promise one reminder.

The calendar

September: passport; five programmes shortlisted. October: transcripts and the grading-scale letter; reference emails sent. November: Europass CV; the master motivation letter. December to January: submit each application before its own deadline. February: the same file into Türkiye Bursları, Stipendium Hungaricum and the Chinese Government Scholarship. March to June: results; reserve-list offers are real, so stay reachable. September 2027: passing-out parade, then departure.

The hard truth

Popular programmes take five to fifteen percent of applicants; one application is a lottery ticket and five is a plan. Programme pages for the 37 new masters may not be live until later in the autumn; the catalogue is the place to watch.
