Erasmus Mundus for corpers and graduates: the catalogue, the documents, the calendar

This is the pack behind the MUNDUS video, from the Rekoja desk in Lagos. It turns the service year into an application season: what Erasmus Mundus is, who it funds, how to pick programmes that actually fund people from Nigeria, the papers in order, and a calendar that ends at the passing-out parade with a plane ticket.

What it pays
An Erasmus Mundus Joint Master is a master's designed and delivered by at least three universities in at least three countries, mostly in Europe; you study in at least two of them and graduate with a joint or multiple degree. The EU-funded scholarship for the best-ranked applicants covers participation costs (tuition and insurance), a contribution to travel and visa costs, and a living allowance of €1,400 a month for up to 24 months, which is about ₦2.2m a month and up to about ₦52.9m over the programme. On 16 July 2026 the European Commission announced 37 new Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters selected in the latest call, opening for student applications in the autumn of 2026, with EU-funded full scholarships available to students from across the world. There is no single application office. You apply directly to each programme's consortium through its own website, and each sets its own deadline, documents and language rules. Reading the catalogue
The official catalogue lists every currently funded programme and links to each consortium's site. Source: Erasmus Mundus catalogue, linked from the official student page. Four things to read on every programme page before it goes on your list:
- The scholarship quota for non-European ("partner country") students; some programmes fund two or three, others fifteen or more. Fewer than five means a harder fight.
- The deadline, separately for scholarship applicants and self-funded applicants; the scholarship deadline is usually earlier.
- The English rule: IELTS or TOEFL, or an accepted letter from your university confirming English as the language of instruction. Ask by email if the page is unclear; a two-line reply from the coordinator settles it.
- The exact documents and reference format; some consortia want referees to upload directly.
Pick three to five programmes across at least two of these three groups: one in your exact field, one adjacent field where your degree still fits, and one of the 37 new programmes (new programmes carry full scholarship quotas in their first intake).

I am applying for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in [programme name] and would be grateful if you would act as one of my two academic referees. The consortium asks for [a letter on university letterhead / an online form the referee completes]; the deadline is [date]. I have attached my transcript, CV and draft motivation letter so you have everything in one place. I will send a reminder one week before the deadline and will not need anything else from you.

A worked example
Chidi, 24, B.Sc Microbiology, second class upper, serving in Kwara, ₦77,000 a month allowance. September: passport renewed. October: five programmes, two in public health, two in food science, one of the 37 new ones in infectious diseases. Referee emails sent to two lecturers with his transcript attached. November: his university issues a medium-of-instruction letter; three of his five programmes accept it, so he books IELTS for the other two only if the budget allows, otherwise he drops them for two more that accept the letter. December and January: five submissions. June: a reserve-list offer converts. September 2027: parade on a Thursday, flight the following week. His costs across the year: transcripts, the letter, passport, one IELTS at most, and courier fees; under ₦400,000 in total. If nothing converts, the same file is already inside three other funded programmes.
What quietly kills applications
- One application instead of five.
- A motivation letter copied across programmes with the names changed.
- Referees asked two weeks before the deadline.
- Missing the scholarship deadline while aiming at the later admission deadline.
- Paying an "agent" to submit a form that has no fee.
Questions people ask (from the programme's own guidance)
Is there one deadline? No; each programme sets its own, most between December and February for a September start.
Can I apply in my final year? Yes, if you graduate before the programme begins and can prove it before enrolment.
Do I apply to the EU? No; you apply directly to the consortium running the programme.
Before you go
Your service year ends September 2027. So does the waiting. Send the two reference emails this week; the rest is a calendar.
