UK visit visa refused? The refusal decoder: what the letter means and what to rebuild
Updated 13 September 2026
This is the pack behind the RESCUE video, from the Rekoja desk in Lagos, where refused files are rebuilt every week. Its promise: you will finish this page knowing which family your refusal belongs to, what to rebuild, and whether you can go again this week or have to build something first.
Which of these is you
- My letter mentions money, deposits or bank statements
- My letter mentions my job, my family or my intention to return
- My letter mentions inconsistencies, previous applications or documents that could not be verified
- I want to know the rule the officer used
The rule behind every letter
Appendix V of the Immigration Rules sets the "genuine visitor" requirement at paragraph V 4.2. The decision maker must be satisfied that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit; will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits or make the UK your main home; are genuinely seeking entry for a permitted purpose; will not undertake prohibited activities; and have sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs of the visit without working or accessing public funds, including the return trip and any dependants. Your letter will say "I am not satisfied that" and quote one or more of those limbs. That sentence is the diagnosis. Everything below sorts it.
Day one
Do not reapply with the same file. The rules set no waiting period after a refusal; you can apply again the next day. What has to change is the file, not the date. There is no right of appeal against an ordinary visit visa refusal, and administrative review is not available for visitor applications; the route is a fresh application, with a fresh fee, and the officer reads your last file beside the new one. In narrow cases where a refusal engages a human-rights claim, a challenge may exist, and that is a lawyer's assessment, not a comment-section one. A Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for up to six months, about ₦248,000. Sources: Visit the UK as a Standard Visitor and Ask for a visa administrative review.
If you have the letter in front of you, the Refusal Decoder sorts your paragraph into one of the three families below in a few seconds, free, without the letter leaving your phone.
Family one: the money story
Typical sentences: "large deposits", "the source of these funds has not been demonstrated", "the funds are not commensurate with your stated income", "I am not satisfied that the funds are available to you".
What the officer saw: money that arrived recently, or sits oddly against your salary, or belongs to someone whose relationship to you and reason for paying is not evidenced.
Rebuild list:
- Six months of statements from the account you rely on, showing the money living there, not landing the week before.
- For any large deposit, a one-page letter from the sender with their ID and their own statement showing the money leaving them, plus one line on why (a gift, a loan repaid, a sale of a car, with the sale document).
- Payslips or business records that make the balance believable next to your income.
- If a sponsor in the UK is paying, their sponsorship letter, their last three payslips, their bank statements and their status document.
How long: as long as it takes to put the missing evidence in the file. If the statements and the sender's letter already exist, that can be the same week, even the next day. If the money still has to sit and show a history, it takes the months it takes to show it. Do not "prepare" a statement; a prepared statement is forgery and it ends your UK history.
Family two: ties
Typical sentences: "you have not demonstrated sufficiently strong ties", "your personal and economic circumstances in Nigeria", "I am not satisfied that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit".
What the officer saw: a job letter with no leave dates, a business with no registration, a family that could travel with you, or a first-time applicant with no travel history and no anchor.
Rebuild list:
- Employer letter on letterhead with your role, salary, start date, the approved leave dates and the date you are expected back.
- CAC registration, tax filings and business bank statements for the self-employed.
- Evidence of the people who stay: children's school letters, a spouse's employment letter, a parent in your care.
- Property documents in your name where they exist; tenancy where they do not.
- A short cover letter that tells the officer, in order, why you are going, for how long, who is paying, and what pulls you back, with the document that proves each line named beside it.
How long: if the tie exists and you simply did not show it (the leave letter, the CAC certificate, the school letter), gather it and go, this week. If the tie has to be built, it takes the months it takes, because ties are built, not typed: a new job letter dated the week after a refusal is read as a reaction, not a tie.
Family three: credibility
Typical sentences: "inconsistent with", "could not be verified", "you failed to declare", "false representation" (this last one is serious and changes the advice below).
What the officer saw: a mismatch between the form and the documents, a previous refusal or overstay not declared, a document the issuer could not confirm.
Rebuild list:
- Reconcile every date, figure and name between the form and every document before anything is submitted.
- Declare every previous refusal, from any country, with the reason, in the form and in the cover letter.
- If a document could not be verified, contact the issuer, obtain a fresh copy and a contact line the officer can reach.
- If the letter alleges deception, stop here and get advice before any reapplication; a deception finding can carry a ban, and a wrong reapplication makes it worse.
How long: reapply the day you can explain the mismatch in writing, once, cleanly. That can be this week if it was a typing error; longer if trust has to be rebuilt.
A worked example
Bayo, 38, Surulere, refused a visit to attend his sister's graduation in Manchester. The letter: "large unexplained deposits" and "not satisfied you will leave the UK". Two families. His rebuild: ₦2.2m arrived from his brother the week before he applied, so he obtains his brother's letter, ID and statement, and lets the money sit for six months while his own salary account shows the rhythm of his life; he asks his employer for a letter with approved leave dates; he adds his daughter's school letter and his rent agreement. He reapplies in month seven, £135, with a two-page cover letter that answers both limbs in order. The plain note: a rebuilt file is a stronger file; nobody can promise a decision.
Who this is not for
- A letter alleging deception or false representation: professional advice first, not a reapplication.
- A refusal of a different visa (student, spouse, work): different rules, different decoder; the assessment routes you.
- Anyone planning to overstay: this page will not help you and neither will we.
What quietly kills the second application
- Reapplying inside a month with the same documents.
- A sponsor who "sends money" the week before instead of showing their own accounts.
- Not declaring the first refusal.
- A cover letter that argues with the officer instead of answering the paragraph.
Questions people ask (from the refusal letters people share with us)
Can I appeal a visit visa refusal? Not an ordinary one; administrative review is also unavailable for visitor applications. A fresh application is the route, and only a lawyer can tell you whether a rare human-rights challenge applies.
Does a refusal ban me? A standard refusal does not; a deception finding can. Read your letter for the word "false".
How long should I wait? Until the thing the officer could not see now exists and is documented, not until you have another fee.
Before you go
A refusal is a verdict on a file, not on you. Find your paragraph, rebuild that family, and reapply when the document exists, not when the fee does.
