The ₦12m Truth Table
Updated 25 August 2026
Which doors open at your budget, and which gate each door actually has, so nobody can lie to you in either direction again.
Which of these is you
- I have around ₦12m and everybody says it is not enough. Start at "The offer gates". Six routes ask somebody else the money question.
- I have ₦25m or more for one person. Start at "The bank-balance gates". Two of those gates clear at your number, and the calendar rules decide the file.
- I am planning for my child or my family. Start at "The three-number self-match", then read "The Adewales" walked through it.
- I just want to avoid the traps. Start at "The mistakes that quietly kill files".
The bank-balance gates
Money the government asks to see, for one person:
| Door | Living money the rule asks for | In naira | Tuition on top? | The calendar rule | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK student visa (outside London) | £1,171 a month for up to 9 months = £10,539 | about ₦19.5m | Yes, first year's fee on your CAS | Money held 28 days in a row; the window ends within 31 days of applying | gov.uk, student visa money |
| UK student visa (London) | £1,529 a month for up to 9 months = £13,761 | about ₦25.5m | Yes | Same 28-day rule | gov.uk, student visa money |
| Canada study permit | CAD 22,895 a year (applications on or after 1 Sept 2025) | about ₦22.6m | Yes, plus transport | Bank statements for the past 4 months are among the accepted proofs | canada.ca, financial support |
| Germany student visa | €992 a month blocked = €11,904 a year | about ₦18.9m | Mostly no at public universities | Blocked account; you may withdraw €992 a month | Federal Foreign Office |
| Ireland student visa | €10,000 immediately accessible, plus at least €6,000 tuition paid before the visa | about ₦15.9m + ₦9.5m = ₦25.4m | Yes (the €6,000 is part of it) | Rule in force from 30 June 2025 | Irish Immigration Service |
| Netherlands student permit | €1,130.77 a month x 12 = €13,569 | about ₦21.5m | Yes | Usually paid to the university, which applies for you | IND, required amounts |
What this part tells you: at ₦12m today, none of the six bank-balance gates above clears for one person before tuition. That is a fact, not a verdict. Read on.
The offer gates
These doors ask somebody else the money question. For the three Canadian ones, our free Atlantic Route Finder tells you in one search which provinces currently name your kind of work and which companies are approved to hire it.
| Door | What the gate actually is | Money you still show | In naira | What it pays you | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canada, Atlantic Immigration Program | A full-time, non-seasonal job offer from an employer designated by the province, endorsed by the province | CAD 3,815 (1 person) to 7,090 (4); cannot be borrowed, cannot be property | about ₦3.8m (1), ₦7.0m (4) | A salary and permanent residence | canada.ca, AIP proof of funds |
| Canada, Rural Community Immigration Pilot (14 communities) | Job offer from an employer approved by the community, which recommends you to IRCC | Per the pilot page | see page | Salary and PR | canada.ca, rural pilot |
| Canada, Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (6 communities) | Same shape, French-speaking; status Open | Fees from about CAD 1,525 (about ₦1.5m); read the page on the day | see page | Salary and PR | canada.ca, francophone pilot |
| Hungary, Stipendium Hungaricum | A scholarship win (about 1 in 18); Nigeria is a sending partner; next call expected November, deadline mid-January | Flight and first month only | your own budget | Tuition waived; HUF 43,700 a month (about ₦174,000); free dorm or HUF 40,000 (about ₦159,000) towards rent; health cover | stipendiumhungaricum.hu and the partner list |
| Russia, Open Doors (registration 20 Aug to 1 Nov 2026) | Winning an online olympiad; tuition covered under the government quota | Flight, room, insurance, visa fees | your own budget | Tuition free; stipend varies by university | od.globaluni.ru |
| Germany, paid vocational training (Ausbildung) | A training contract with a company plus B1 German (A2 for assistant training) | Your training pay is your proof of livelihood | n/a | A monthly trainee wage for 2 to 3 years, then the skilled-worker route | make-it-in-germany.com |
The three-number self-match
Write these on one page: (1) cash available today, (2) the applicant's highest qualification, (3) the applicant's age. Then find your line:
- ₦12m, a 2:1, 22: Hungary first (file built from September), Open Doors alongside (register before 1 November), the German language ladder as the long asset.
- ₦12m, 20 years of work, 52: put your job into the Route Finder this week; your experience is what those towns are short of, and the lists are public.
- ₦12m, a degree, French at B2 or better: the Canada French-language draws (last draw 382 on 19 August) before any study route.
- ₦12m, OND or WAEC only, under 35: the German training route; the gate is B1 in twelve months.
- ₦25m or more, one person, a strong admission: the Germany or UK-outside-London gates clear; Canada clears with tuition added; the 28-day and 4-month calendar rules decide the file, not the amount.
The Adewales (a picture, not a client)
Mr Adewale, 52, Ibadan, ₦12m from a land sale, 20 years in logistics. Daughter Tolu, 17, seven credits, wants Pharmacy. Their match: Tolu builds the Hungary file now (transcripts and two referees in September, English test in October, two programmes chosen in November, submission in December) and registers for Open Doors before 1 November. Mr Adewale puts "logistics" into the Route Finder, takes the approved companies it returns, and applies only to roles those companies are actually advertising, with a Canadian-format CV. The ₦12m stays in the bank for the one door that asks for it, not spent on a route whose gate it cannot clear. Tolu also sits JAMB, because nothing in this plan waits on a scholarship.
The mistakes that quietly kill files
- Money that lands the week before the application (the UK reads 28 days; Canada reads 4 months).
- Borrowed or "prepared" bank statements: the Atlantic page says it cannot be borrowed; everywhere else it is fraud, and fraud bans.
- Saving towards a number that moves: Canada's figure went up in September 2025; Ireland's changed in June 2025.
- Shopping by tuition instead of by gate: a €2,000 course behind a €13,000 living-money gate is still a €15,000 door.
- Paying anyone for an Atlantic or community "job offer": it cannot be sold, and a bought one is a misrepresentation ban.
Not on this table
Italy, Austria, Malta, Spain and Sweden all have money gates, and none of them is here yet. Treat any figure you are given for those five the way you would treat a price with no receipt: ask which page it came from, and open that page yourself. Numbers quoted from memory are how families end up saving towards the wrong amount for a year.
This month's timeline
- Now: register for Open Doors (closes 1 November).
- September: Hungary transcripts and referees; Atlantic and community list searches and CV.
- October: English test (Hungary); first language class (German or French).
- November: Hungary call expected; choose programmes the week it opens.
Naira figures on this page were converted at the 22 August 2026 rates (£1 = ₦1,851, €1 = ₦1,585, CAD 1 = ₦987; HUF amounts through the programme's own euro equivalents).
